U.S. Southwests Colorado River (Geography and More)

The Colorado River (map) is a very large river located in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. The states it runs through include Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, Baja California and Sonora. It is approximately 1,450 miles (2,334 km) in length and it drains an area of about 246,000 square miles (637,000 sq km). The Colorado River is important historically and it is also a major source of water and electrical power for millions of people in the areas in which it drains. The elevation of this lake is approximately 9,000 feet (2,750 m). This is a significant point in the geography of the United States because it is where the Continental Divide meets the Colorado River drainage basin. As the Colorado River begins to descend in elevation and flow to the west, it flows into Grand Lake in Colorado. After descending further, the river then enters several reservoirs and finally flows out to where it parallels U.S. Highway 40, joins several of its tributaries and then parallels U.S. Interstate 70 for a short time. Once the Colorado River meets the U.S. southwest, it begins to meet several more dams and reservoirs- the first of which is the Glen Canyon Dam which forms Lake Powell in Arizona. From there, the Colorado River begins to flow through massive canyons which it helped carve millions of years ago. Among these is the 217 mile (349 km) long Grand Canyon. After flowing through the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River meets the Virgin River (one of its tributaries) in Nevada and flows into Lake Mead after being blocked by the Hoover Dam at the Nevada/Arizona border. After flowing through the Hoover Dam, the Colorado River continues its course toward the Pacific through several more dams, including the Davis, Parker and Palo Verde Dams. It then flows into the Coachella and Imperial Valleys in California and finally into its delta in Mexico. It should be noted, however, that the Colorado River delta, while once rich marshland, is today mainly dry aside from exceptionally wet years due to the removal of water upstream for irrigation and city uses. Human History of the Colorado River Humans have inhabited the Colorado River basin for thousands of years. Early nomadic hunters and Native Americans have left artifacts throughout the area. For example, the Anasazi began living in Chaco Canyon at around 200 B.C.E. Native American civilizations grew to their peak from 600 to 900 C.E. but they began to decline after that, likely due to drought. The Colorado River was first noted in historic documents in 1539 when Francisco de Ulloa sailed upstream from the Gulf of California. Shortly thereafter, several attempts were made by various explorers to sail farther upstream. Throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, a variety of maps showing the river were drawn but they all had different names and courses for it. The first map using the name Colorado appeared in 1743. Throughout the late 1800s and into the 1900s, several expeditions to explore and accurately map the Colorado River took place. In addition from 1836 to 1921, the Colorado River was called the Grand River from its source in Rocky Mountain National Park to its confluence with the Green River in Utah. In 1859 a U.S. Army topographic expedition led by John Macomb occurred, during which he precisely located the confluence of the Green and Grand Rivers and declared it the source of the Colorado River. In 1921, the Grand River was renamed the Colorado River and since then the river has included all of its present-day area. Dams of the Colorado River The modern history of the Colorado River consists mainly of managing its water for municipal uses and to prevent flooding. This came as a result of a flood in 1904. In that year, the rivers water broke through a diversion canal near Yuma, Arizona. This created the New and Alamo Rivers and eventually flooded the Salton Sink, forming the Coachella Valleys Salton Sea. In 1907 however, a dam was built to return the river to its natural course. Since 1907, several more dams have been constructed along the Colorado River and it has grown into a major source of water for irrigation and municipal uses. In 1922, the states in the Colorado River basin signed the Colorado River Compact which governed each states rights to the rivers water and set specific annual allotments of what could be taken. Shortly after the signing of the Colorado River Compact, the Hoover Dam was constructed to provide water for irrigation, manage flooding and generate electricity. Other large dams along the Colorado River include the Glen Canyon Dam as well as the Parker, Davis, Palo Verde and Imperial Dams. In addition to these large dams, some cities have aqueducts running to the Colorado River to further aid in maintaining their water supplies. Understanding The Underlying Tricks Behind Advertisements

According to post structuralist theorists, there is an inevitable slippage or failure built into all language. By relating this to advertising, we find that there will always a gap between the intended and received message. Illusions, visual markers, language are all ambiguous and reveal a political meaning behind the assumptions made by advertisers. Certain interpretative frameworks and connotations are meant to be universal: heteronormativity, specific conceptions of gender, wealth accumulation. It is a modernised process where not only people develop but also opportunities for them, their standard of living and they become more professional. It is a replacement phase of urban life from rural life when the whole society is open for change in order to grow and prosper. Globalisation is the process of international interchange of goods, services and people around the world (Beck, 2015). It is the exchange of different cultures and ideas from different pa rts of the world. It has taken pace from past one or two decades as people have decided to trade with each other and the big national firms have expanded to become multinational businesses. It has proved to be a beneficial situation where different economies can exploit the markets of the other parts of the world. This will result in the betterment of the global economy and increase in the international trade. In the current case, the two modernisation processes that are urbanisation and globalisation which are experienced by Tom, my father-in-law who migrated from Italy to Australia fifty years back. Research method helps in searching for the best method of data collection which will be appropriate for conducting the research (Creswell, 2013). It also ensures that the data collected is appropriate, accurate and reliable. Data collection will help in reaching out to the results of the research. It is an important phase to conduct the research. There are two types of data that are primary and secondary data which can be collected through different sources (Phillips Stawarski, 2016). Primary data is the first hand data which is more reliable in comparison to the secondary data. The secondary data can be collected through internal or external sources. Primary data can be further classified into two types i.e. quantitative and qualitative data. Personal interview is further a type of quantitative data collection as it is one of the most reliable methods (Hair, 2015). In the current case, the method followed is the Personal Interview method to draw out the personal experience of my father-in-law Tom as this will be the best suited method for this research (Thyer, 2010). For this research Tom was informed beforehand the objective behind the research and also he was being told that he could withdraw any time during the research. Before, moving further a consent form was signed by him with the current date in which it was mentioned that all the information provided by the interviewee will be used for research purpose only. In which it was clearly included that Tom was not forced to undergo any interview. He was told the reason behind conducting the interview that it was just for knowing more about his early life and his experiences before and after he migrated to Australia from Italy. For the same, I evolved some set of questions which were to be answered by him. There were some questions which I asked him to come closer to the experiences of his lif e. The interview was held at Toms place to make him more comfortable and make it more of an informal conversation. The motive of the questions were to come closer to Toms life his past and present idea of life also, his opinions about his religion. The questions which were asked to the interviewee are as follows: Which childhood memories you remember the most? Who were your inspirations to become the person you are today? What was the reason of migrating? What is his idea of Urbanisation and Globalisation? What is the difference he saw between Italy and Australia? Are there any negative aspects of the two processes? What is the learning from urbanisation? What made him take his company on global platform? Findings Tom was born in a farmers family small village of Italy with a population of 200 people only. He is a catholic by and has a strong belief in his religion. His parents were farmers and the ones who were totally dependent on farming to earn their living. The family was disciplined when it came to going for prayer service at the church. Toms early childhood memories were with his grandparents who were also farmers and loved Tom very much. Tom was the only child of his parents. The best childhood memories of Tom were that he used to accompany his grandfather for the evening walk and listened to the bed time stories from his grandmother as his parents were busy in earning livelihood for the family. These moments are still cherished by him in the memory of his loving grandparents. His family was satisfied in what they had but some months in the year were very tough because of bad weather conditions. After his grandparents death, when he was 21, the family moved to Australia in search of more stable livelihood. Where his father got into an agricultural company with his years of experience in farming and his mother was into agriculture chemical industry. Tom pursued internship for real time experience in the field of IT engineering as his studies were about to wind up. Post experience, Tom opened his own IT software company starting from his personal computer and now he owns a big IT firm which serves customers across the globe. Tom is 71 now, he is a happy and contented man who is satisfied with his decisions, he has no complaints with the new city rather it is as dear as his native is to him. In relation to this, it earned living to him whereas his native has made him the person who he is today. No matter Tom and family moved to city but they used to organise trips to their native place to relive the old days as it was very close their heart. In search of growth and development his family migrated to city which depicts one of the modernisation process i.e. urbanisation (Price Benton, 2008). He is a happy family man and has seen vast changes over the period of time with respect to people, their behaviour, idea of life, views towards religion etc. Tom has seen urbanisation when he came to Australia from Italy and after coming to Australia he saw the country growing along with its people as the whole world is on with the idea of Globalisation. This process has helped people trade with everyone and everywhere around the world. Globalisation has emerged a lot in the past two decades and has encouraged people to go global and become part of the global family (Michie, 2011). The interview has explained that how Tom has been the part of the two modernisation processes and the events of his life depicts the true picture. Discussion Analysis The change in Toms life from his village life to his city life and that of an intern to the owner of a company has explained the two processes very well that are urbanisation and globalisation. The study has shown the impact of such processes on an individuals life. This can be analysed from the answers given by Tom to the questions. The study found out that Tom moved from the rural village of Italy to the city of Australia with his family in search of new opportunities, stability and betterment of the family. Movement from the rural area to urban area is known as urbanisation basically people like Tom who are migrating witness such process (Benna, et al., 2016). All the years that Tom has spent in Australia have a long story about his journey. The two processes are important parts of his journey which have led him here. The difference between the lives in village in comparison to the lives in the city is basically peace. Most of the times, Tom manage sometime to get back to his olde r days to his native place in search of peace and relaxation. Once Tom has settled down in Australia he has witnessed that urbanisation is one of the reason to take people away from their near and dear ones who are left back. In order to break this stereotype he usually goes back to his relatives and friends to maintain that relationship with them and their environment. Tom not only gives priority to his career and money but also the people who have supported and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. His parents always gave him encouragement to pursue his career and never forced him to come into agriculture or farming. This is the reason why he thinks that growth is important but not at the stake of personal relationship. He found himself blessed to be around such people who have backed him always whether they were his grandparents or his parents. They were source of inspiration to him. He believes that the decision of migrating and residing in a city from village has not only resulted in his personal prosperity and growth but also that of his familys. The opportunities in urban area have not only given a lot to him but the same to his children. The biggest learning what they learnt is how to earn themselves a living of their own. An extension to urbanisation was found by him to be globalisation where migration of people and goods and services in terms of trade, commerce, industry and expansion took place. He quoted that globalisation can be referred to as the growth and development of urbanisation which makes the whole world a common village (Price Benton, 2008). In this respect, people can serve to and demand from anywhere in the word. Similarly, Tom is also doing the same as a global IT firm which provides IT solutions to customers and businesses. The meaning of growth what Tom wanted me to understand was not only his career or financial growth but his personal growth which has come to him because of the experience and hard work. The phase of moving from a very dear place where you have were born and brought up to a totally strange place has compelled him to introspect his dreams, beliefs, idea to grow basically his oneself. Tom is a person who is very concerned about his workplace and his country therefore; he has carries operations from his country only. Further what has been analysed from the discussion is that Tom is an individual who is concerned for work, family and society. He wants value for money being an entrepreneur and always wants to give best to his family. Value for him is not only in expensive things but also in inexpensive things which can give value to him. He is of the category of visible achievers. They are confident and successful people and they have settled in their respective fields. He also accepts the negative aspect of the two processes. Firstly, he said that urbanisation keeps away an individual from his native place in order to earn a living. Secondly, globalisation keeps away an individual from serving people of the other parts of the world other than the people of his own country. Both the processes have made him the man he is today as he has lived in two different places and has experienced two modernisation social processes. Conclusion From the above study it can be concluded that every day is new and dynamic because people are different from one generation to another. How Tom was during his childhood or adolescent his children cannot be the same because with each step there are cultural and social changes which can be referred to as modernisation. Both the processes had a great impact on Toms life. He was all in all a happy person even after so many ups and downs. The interview has given me the opportunity to know him more personally and also my older family. The informal idea of interview has made it more interesting and has helped in generating more reliable information and also made both of us even more comfortable with each other. The outcome of the interview are his experiences and their effects on his life most of which are depicted to be positive and less of negative. Although, in between there were talks which were not related to the topic but I kept with the centre idea to know the influence of the two pr ocesses on Toms life. Their Loss of Illusion The two stories â€Å"Araby† by James Joyce and â€Å"Jasmine† by Bharati Mukherjee are both stories of youth and lost innocence. These two stories have different settings, different characters, they were even written at different times. One of them is the story of a boy and the other of a young woman; however, the basic concept is still the same. Both of the authors through their stories lead the way for their characters and their final disillusionment. In his brief yet complex story â€Å"Araby†, James Joyce concentrates entirely on his character, a young boy who lived in Dublin around the turn of the century. This is a story about a boy’s quest, but even though the quest ends in failure, it results in his awakening and his first step into manhood. At the beginning of the story he is lonely and isolated, yet imaginative. He is ignorant and therefore innocent, and lacks the full understanding of the world around him. This all changes quickly after he finds himself in love with a beautiful young girl. He agrees to go to Araby to buy her a gift; however, when he arrives there it is too late. â€Å"Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity, and my eyes burned with anguish and anger.† I believe that this darkness is used as a symbol. At this moment he probably realizes that thing young lady was only using him, and the darkness symbolizes his sudden awareness and disappointment as he finds his fantasies shattered. Small windmills have been providing power for rural homes throughout the world since almost a hundred years ago. They were used for powering water pumps and also converted wind into useable electricity for homes. In the 1930s, programs to bring electricity to more remote areas extended the electrical grid system to these areas causing windmill generated power to gradually be replaced by electricity generated by power stations which burnt fossil fuels such as oil and coal to generate electricity. This eventually caused the disappearance of windmills in rural areas. However, in recent times, new more modern and advanced wind machines are beginning to appear on the landscape of many regions of the world. Discovery of windy rural areas has enabled people to harness the power of the wind in much larger quantities than ever before. Through technology, it is possible to now generate clean, cost effective, and renewable energy. This could range from a single turbine powering a single landowners home and facilities, to large scale wind farms which could supply power to the grid itself and in turn provide electrical needs to hundreds of homes. Advancement of technology and it declining cost makes wind generated electricity more competitive with fossil fuel generated electricity. The cost of wind generated electricity has decreased greatly since the beginning, and it is estimated that wind power supply ten to twenty percent of electricity needs in the United States could within three to four decades. Despite these the impressive advantages of wild resources, it is still only in an infancy stage in many parts of the world. Only recent pollution laws, increase in fossil fuel costs and the fear of the exhaustion of fossil fuels have led to the intense development of wind power. Wind energy has many advantages, for example, wind is free and with modern technology it can be captured efficiently. Wind is naturally produced when there are pressure differences in the air above the earths surface. When air gets heated up, it rises creating a low pressure area. Cooler, high pressure air from the surroundings the rush in the take its place. This creates wind. This is especially true in coastal areas due to the fact that water takes longer to heat up as compared to air, therefore resulting in a great difference in pressure between the air above the water and land, which results in exceptionally strong winds. Mountainous areas also have strong winds that could potentially power wind turbines. As different slopes are heated at different times of the day, pressure differences are created in the mountain range creating wind. In certain instances, the shape of the mountains and valleys may also act as a funnel, causing the wind to accelerate to higher speed as the approa ch these areas. Once wind turbines are built in place, the energy they produces do not cause green house gases or any other form of pollution. This means that with time, the operation of the wind turbine would actually make up for whatever carbon footprint it has left because of its construction. The power produced by the wind turbine over time would exceed what was used in the form of fossil fuels, and raw materials during it construction. Given enough time, a wind turbine would actually pay for its own construction and maintenance through the revenue it generates by producing power. Although wind turbines often reach up to above 50 meters tall, each single turbine only takes up a small plot of land. This is due to advancement of technology where thanks to modern materials and designs. Wind turbine towers are and with space aged materials which are strong and light and designed to have minimum drag resistance. Also because turbines have to be spaced a certain distance from each other, the land in between them can still be used for other purposes such as farming or even for building homes. Remote areas which are located far away from the main power grid can use wind turbines to produce their own electricity. Just a few wind turbines could potentially supply power to a small community located far away from the power grid, saving the cost of extending the grid to the community. Wind turbines are also available in many different sizes. This means that people from all walks of life can make use of wind turbines be it for personal use to supply electricity to a single home or to supply power to business or even small town or villages. As wind occurs all over the world, there is no place in the world that the power of wind cannot be harvested. This could be an advantage for third world countries where there is no electricity supply. Since wind turbines only require an initial start-up cost and minimal maintenance cost, it could be possible to provide electricity for poorer settlements or countries. However, the strength of wind will almost never be constant. It varies from nothing at all to storm force. This implies that wind turbines will not be able to produce consistent electricity at all times. There will even be times when it produces on energy at all. Due to this, the wind turbine has to be located in a location where there is enough wind so that it would be able to run at energy producing speeds for most of the year. For this to happen, many factors have to be taken into consideration. Wind speed data has to be recorded for a specific location at least a year to ensure that the wind conditions would be suitable for building a wind turbine. Other factors that have to be considered include any obstacles that the wind may encounter before it is able to reach the turbine such as buildings and trees. Location of wind turbines due to their nature would usually have to be located in open areas. This in turn brings other difficulties such as ease of transportation of materials to the build site and connection to the power grid. Furthermore locations with the highest winds are usually costal areas. Building offshore wind turbines, although does not require any land space, is very expensive to build due to the extra structural reinforcements needed to build standing structure in the ocean. Many people also feel that the countryside should not be spoilt by building large structures would reduce the aesthetic appeal of the environment. Conservationists also oppose the building of wind farms for fear that they may kill of interfere with wild life such as migratory routes of birds. Wind turbines, depending on perspective, are noisy. Each turbine generates about the same level of noise as a car travelling at approximately 70 miles per hour. Therefore if there are homes located near the wind turbine, residents may be disturbed by the noise generated by the wind turbines. During the manufacture of wind turbines, pollution is also produced in the form of energy consumed for fabrication of materials and pollution produced by vehicles used during the transportation and building of the turbines. Therefore it cannot be said that wind power produces no pollution at all. Finally, if an entire communitys needs were to be provided by a single wind farm, the wind farm itself would have to be extremely big considering that the largest turbines available today would only be able to power just under 500 homes. If a town or city of 100, 000 homes were to run on solely wind power, then a farm of almost 200 turbines would be needed. Taking the distance needed between each turbine, then an immense area of land would be needed just to power this town. After considering both advantages and disadvantages of wind turbines, I have come to the conclusion that although it is impractical and unrealistic to supply the entire worlds power with wind power, it is a highly efficient way of harnessing free energy from the environment. If as much available space as possible were to be used as wind farms, coupled with other renewable energy sources such as solar, bio-fuels, and hydro-electric power were used to substitute fossil fuels whenever possible, then the impact on the environment would be greatly lessened. This would greatly reduce the usage of fossil fuels, thus giving researches more time to come up with solutions to the worlds energy needs without relying on fossil fuels which will eventually run out and also how to reduce the load of burning fossil fuels on the environment.

The Success of The Woman in Black as a Ghost Story Susan Hill believes that the ghost depends on 'atmosphere' and 'a sense of place'. However, a believable storyline and characters does help bring out the atmosphere and place. 'The Woman in Black' is about a man, Arthur Kipps. He is the narrator throughout the novel. Arthur Kipps tells his most haunting revelation that had happened to him, and how by writing his story as a novel, it was hoping to help exorcise the ghost that still haunts him. He tells the story of when he was a junior solicitor and, how he was ordered by his firm's partner to travel up from London to attend a funeral and then sort out the papers of the dead woman. While in Crythin Gifford he glimpses a young woman with a wasted face, dressed all in black. He sees her at the back of the church during Mrs Drablow's funeral, and again later in the graveyard to one side of Eel Marsh House. He is the only one that appears to see her. However, soon the lady in black slowly reveals herself to him, as is her purpose. The first passage is extracted from the chapter 'Across the Causeway'. The first sighting that Arthur Kipps has with the woman in black is in the churchyard after Mrs Drablow's funeral. Susan Hill picks the right place to have Arthur Kipps' first sighting of the woman in black. She has the setting in a churchyard. When the reader comes across 'churchyard' you get the image of fear and decay. Using this Susan Hill goes into describing the churchyard in detail 'Ahead, where the wall ended in a heap of dust and rubble, lay the grey water of the estuary'. Susan Hill makes the image very precise. She also uses distinct contrast, 'across the tall grasses, and wild flowers of white and ... ...' the question Arthur is asking himself 'why is it rocking?' He is asking himself as well as the reader. 'someone has just got out of it' However Arthur is the only one in the house. There is a sense of unease as the windows are all closed so no one can get out. Susan Hill makes the readers ask themselves questions why? Who could it be? She keeps the reader in suspense. Susan Hill Believes that a good ghost story depends on the 'atmosphere' and 'a sense of place'. There are many points which a good ghost story should have unfamiliarity, a mystery, description and much more. However I personally believe that without a believable characters and storyline there is no basis of having atmosphere or a sense of place. So overall, yes a ghost story does depend on 'atmosphere' and 'a sense of place' but it must contain a believable story line with characters.
